The streets of Uptown Charlotte pulsed with energy this Saturday as thousands of runners laced up for the 2025 Novant Health Charlotte Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K. With registration numbers surging and a palpable sense of excitement in the air, this year’s event marked not just a test of endurance, but a celebration of community, resilience, and giving back.
A Citywide Running Boom
Charlotte’s running scene is experiencing a renaissance. Race Director Tim Rhodes noted a “new running boom” sweeping the city, with participation numbers rebounding after a brief dip in recent years. “It’s not just a big deal for runners,” Rhodes told WCNC, “but you think about the money that’s being raised for the Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital, and it’s a big deal for the whole community”.
More than 9,000 runners took to the starting line at 525 S Tryon Street, cheered on by friends, family, and local supporters. The event featured three main races: the full marathon and half marathon, both starting at 7:20 a.m., and the popular 5K, which kicked off at 7:35 a.m.
Racing for a Cause
Since 2014, the Charlotte Marathon has raised over
$500,000 for the Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital, making every stride count for children and families across the Carolinas. Runners and charity teams continue to rally behind this cause, with many participants dedicating their races to young patients and their families.
Weather Throws a Curveball
This year’s marathon wasn’t just a test of speed—it was a battle against the elements. Organizers warned runners to prepare for “warmer and more humid than average” conditions, with race-day temperatures expected to be more than 20 degrees above the ideal mid-40s for endurance running. High humidity made cooling off a challenge, increasing the risk of overheating and fatigue.
Race officials urged participants to set realistic pace goals, stay hydrated, and avoid running if feeling unwell, especially with flu and viral infections circulating in the community.
