The Federal Aviation Administration has escalated safety concerns surrounding Pratt & Whitney engines on Airbus narrow-body aircraft, issuing a new mandatory inspection directive that underscores ongoing reliability issues plaguing the aviation industry. The latest move comes as major carriers including Hawaiian Airlines and Delta Air Lines continue managing a larger recall affecting their fleets.
The New Emergency Directive
The FAA announced a critical 30-day inspection mandate targeting Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engines on specific Airbus aircraft. The directive requires immediate ultrasonic inspections of the engines' 1st and 2nd stage high-pressure turbine disks to detect fatigue and potential material anomalies. According to the FAA, these
"material anomalies could lead to premature fracture and uncontained failure," triggering what the agency classified as an
"immediate safety of flight problem response."Currently, the scope of this latest directive affects approximately 20 engines on U.S. aircraft, believed to be operated by Spirit Airlines. However, the inspection requirement represents a significant escalation in regulatory action following a December 2022 incident where an aborted takeoff revealed that engine disks were at risk of failing far earlier than previously believed possible.
The Broader Recall Context
This new inspection order exists alongside a much larger recall initiated last month that continues to disrupt operations at major carriers.
Hawaiian Airlines and Delta Air Lines both operate A321neo fleets equipped with Pratt & Whitney engines subject to the broader recall, which will require the removal, inspection, repair, and reinstallation of engines over the next year.
Pratt & Whitney's parent company, RTX Corp., determined that a "rare condition" related to powdered metal would necessitate the inspection of
no less than 1,200 Airbus A320/A321 engines for micro-cracks. The repair process is estimated to take as long as two months per aircraft, forcing airlines to significantly adjust their schedules.
Impact on Hawaiian Airlines Operations
Hawaiian Airlines has already begun implementing schedule changes to accommodate the extensive maintenance requirements. The carrier operates an 18-plane narrow-body fleet, though the airline has not yet disclosed exactly how many aircraft will require the full two-month inspection and repair cycle. Questions also remain about whether maintenance will be conducted at Hawaiian's Philippine-based Singapore Airlines repair facility or if engines will be returned directly to the manufacturer.
What Uncontained Engine Failure Means
The FAA's concern centers on the risk of
uncontained engine failure, a catastrophic scenario where fragments of rotating engine parts penetrate and escape through the engine case. Such failures present direct dangers to aircraft, crew, and passengers, with potential for fragments to penetrate the cabin, damage fuel or hydraulic lines, or compromise critical flight control surfaces.
This safety concern has prompted the regulatory urgency, distinguishing these inspections from routine maintenance procedures and reflecting the aviation industry's commitment to preventing potential disasters.
Industry Context
The Airbus A320 family remains the world's most popular single-aisle aircraft, with
99.6 percent operational reliability over the last six months as of March 2025. Despite this strong overall safety record, the Pratt & Whitney engine issues have created a significant operational challenge for carriers relying on these powerplants.
The situation highlights the delicate balance between maintaining flight schedules and ensuring passenger safety—a balance that Hawaiian Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and other affected carriers are actively managing as inspections and repairs continue throughout the coming months.
