Gaza Faces Catastrophic Hunger and Escalating Conflict
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached a devastating new low, with international agencies declaring a
famine in the Gaza Governorate and warning that over
2.1 million people now face extreme hunger. As Israeli forces prepare to take full military control of Gaza City, the enclave’s population is caught between relentless airstrikes, mass displacement, and the collapse of basic services.
Famine and Humanitarian Collapse
The
Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) officially declared a famine in parts of Gaza on August 22, 2025. Aid organizations report that
470,000 people are at immediate risk of mass starvation, with children, pregnant women, and the elderly suffering most acutely from severe malnutrition. Hospitals are overwhelmed, food supplies have nearly vanished, and only a trickle of humanitarian aid is entering the territory after an 11-week suspension of deliveries.
Since October 2023, more than
61,000 people have died and at least
151,000 have been injured in Gaza, according to the Red Cross and UN agencies. The
collapse of the health system and ongoing fighting have left families trapped, desperately seeking safety as infrastructure crumbles around them.
Israel’s Military Offensive Intensifies
The crisis escalated after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet approved a plan to
take full military control of Gaza City, the enclave’s largest urban center. The operation, timed to coincide with the anniversary of Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack, involves ordering the entire Gaza population to move south, followed by a siege of Gaza City.
Netanyahu’s office stated that the
IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will provide humanitarian aid to civilians outside combat zones, but critics—including British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer—warn that the plan will only bring more bloodshed and push civilians into a “certain death spiral”. Palestinian officials and international observers have condemned the move as a potential act of ethnic cleansing and a violation of international law.
Hostages, Airstrikes, and International Response
The conflict began with a
Hamas attack on Israel that killed at least
1,400 people and resulted in hundreds of hostages being taken. In response, Israel launched a relentless bombing campaign, with the Gaza health ministry reporting at least
3,785 Palestinian deaths in the early weeks and the toll now exceeding
64,000.
The United States has reiterated its support for Israel while also emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian aid in Gaza. President Joe Biden has called for billions in aid and military support, and the US is working with Egypt and Qatar to facilitate the release of hostages and the delivery of emergency supplies.
Daily Life: Survival Amid Despair
For Gaza’s residents, daily life has become a struggle for survival. Families are living in tents, often just meters from missile strikes, and many have been forced to evacuate multiple times. One father in Gaza City described waiting for evacuation orders with his newborn, hoping for “a miracle” to stop the violence.
The
siege has left more than a million people displaced, with food, water, fuel, and medical supplies running out. Aid workers describe catastrophic conditions, with children dying from hunger and hospitals unable to cope with the influx of wounded.
What’s Next for Gaza?
With Israel poised to seize Gaza City and no clear plan for post-conflict governance, the future for Gaza’s 2.1 million residents is deeply uncertain. Netanyahu has suggested handing over the territory to Arab forces, but no details have been provided, and neighboring countries have not agreed to such a plan.
International agencies and humanitarian groups are calling for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and a massive scale-up of aid deliveries to prevent further loss of life. As the world watches, Gaza stands at a crossroads—its people facing famine, displacement, and the threat of even greater violence.
