A Community Shaken by Loss
The University of Houston and the broader college football world are mourning the loss of
Kurt Hester, the Cougars’ Director of Strength and Performance, who passed away Saturday at age 61 after an eight-month battle with Stage IV melanoma. Hester’s death was announced just hours before Houston’s emotional 24-16 upset win over No. 24 Arizona State—a victory the team dedicated to their beloved coach.
The Fight of a Lifetime
Hester’s journey was nothing short of remarkable. Diagnosed in February 2025 after a rib injury led to the discovery of cancer that had spread to his lungs and liver, doctors initially gave him just four to six weeks to live. Defying the odds, Hester continued to inspire those around him, even as he underwent treatment and faced setbacks, including a recent hospitalization due to infection.
His story gained national attention earlier this month when ESPN’s College GameDay featured his unwavering commitment to the team and his “unbreakable” spirit, a mantra that became a rallying cry for the Cougars.
More Than a Coach
Hester’s impact extended far beyond the weight room. Head coach Willie Fritz, who worked with Hester at both Tulane and Houston, called him “the best strength and conditioning coach I’ve ever been around, but more importantly, just a fantastic role model for our student-athletes”. Players and staff described Hester as a source of strength, positivity, and resilience, someone who “had a tremendously positive influence on every single person in our program”.
In his final days, Hester made a point to visit the team, delivering a powerful message just days before his passing. “He knew it was his last time he was going to see the guys. And he really delivered a heck of a message to them,” Fritz shared in a postgame press conference.
Honoring a Legacy
Hester is survived by his wife, Seana, and children Sydney, Rieleah, and Remy. In recognition of his courage, he was nominated for the 2025 Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award just days before his death. The Houston community has rallied to support his family, launching a campaign selling “Kurt Hester is Unbreakable” apparel, with proceeds going toward medical costs and honoring his memory.
The Cougars’ victory over Arizona State became a tribute to Hester’s enduring influence. The team posted on social media, “That was for you, Coach,” encapsulating the deep bond and respect he fostered within the program.
What’s Next for Houston
As the Cougars move forward, Hester’s legacy will continue to shape the program. His philosophy—centered on family, faith, and football—remains embedded in the culture he helped build. The outpouring of support from across the college football landscape is a testament to the lives he touched and the inspiration he provided.
For those wishing to support the Hester family, a fundraising campaign remains active, and the university is planning further tributes in the coming weeks.
