A Town Grieves as Cleveland High School Senior Kimber Mills Is Remembered
The small town of Cleveland, Alabama, is reeling after the tragic loss of
Kimber Mills, an 18-year-old high school senior and cheerleader, who died following a shooting at a weekend bonfire gathering. On Tuesday evening, the halls of UAB Hospital in Birmingham were lined with friends, family, classmates, and hospital staff for an emotional
honor walk—a final tribute before Kimber became an organ donor, giving hope to others even in her final moments.
The Shooting That Shattered a Community
Kimber Mills was shot in the head and leg late Saturday night at a popular wooded hangout spot known as "The Pit" in Pinson, Alabama. According to authorities, 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead stormed the gathering and opened fire, injuring four people, including Kimber. She was rushed to the hospital, but after showing no signs of improvement, her family made the agonizing decision to remove her from life support on Wednesday.
Whitehead, who was initially charged with four counts of attempted murder, is now expected to face upgraded charges following Kimber's death. He remains in custody at the Jefferson County Jail.
The Honor Walk: A Final Goodbye
The
honor walk at UAB Hospital was described by staff as "the biggest gathering for an honor walk the doctor has ever seen". Groups dressed in pink—the color symbolizing Kimber's spirit—lined the hallways as her stretcher was wheeled toward the operating room for organ donation. The emotional procession was captured in a video that quickly spread across social media, showing the depth of Kimber's impact on her community.
Classmates and friends shared memories of Kimber's infectious smile and kind heart. "It broke my heart to know someone as bright as her, beautiful smile, beautiful spirit could have gone through that," said classmate Marilu Valdez. "Love like Kimber, and to take those moments you have with your loved ones and your friends and make the most of them. You never know what might happen".
Michael Helms, who was present at the shooting, said, "I had to, I was there. I witnessed everything. We all feel like family now. We all love her, hope she makes the sky pretty tomorrow".
Community Support and Fundraising
In the wake of the tragedy, the Cleveland High School community and local businesses have rallied to support Kimber's family. A GoFundMe campaign, launched by students and staff, has already raised over
$23,000 toward a
$50,000 goal, with funds going to the Mills family and the other victims still recovering in the hospital.
Local businesses—including S&S Foods, where Kimber's mother works, and K&K Kind + Kups Coffee—are collecting donations. Sassy Mom Studio's is raffling off a free photo session, with
95% of proceeds benefiting the family.
A Legacy of Kindness and Courage
Kimber's decision to be an organ donor has already touched lives beyond her own community. Hospital officials confirmed that multiple people will receive life-saving transplants thanks to her generosity.
Blount County Schools released a statement honoring Kimber's life and legacy, urging students and families to "love like Kimber"—a phrase that has become a rallying cry for those mourning her loss.
What Comes Next
As the Mills family and the Cleveland community continue to grieve, attention now turns to the legal proceedings against Steven Tyler Whitehead. Prosecutors are expected to upgrade charges in light of Kimber's death, and the case has reignited conversations about gun violence and youth safety in small-town America.
For now, Kimber Mills is remembered not just as a victim, but as a beacon of kindness, courage, and selflessness—a young woman whose final act was to give others a second chance at life.
