A Community in Shock
Nebraska is reeling after the sudden passing of
Matt Vrzal, a name synonymous with Husker football, local radio, and Omaha’s food scene. Vrzal, who played as an offensive lineman for the University of Nebraska from 1992 to 1996 and later became a popular radio analyst and pizzeria owner, died at age 51, according to multiple local news outlets.
From Walk-On to Champion
Vrzal’s story is the kind that inspires generations of Nebraskans. Born and raised in Grand Island, he joined the Nebraska Cornhuskers as a walk-on in 1992. By the time he graduated, he had helped the team secure two national championships in 1994 and 1995, embodying the grit and determination that define Husker football.
After his playing days, Vrzal remained a fixture in the Nebraska sports community. He became a regular voice on 1620 The Zone, where his candid takes and humor made him a fan favorite. He also hosted the
Husker Hangover radio show, connecting with listeners far beyond the football field.
More Than Just Football
But Vrzal’s impact stretched well beyond the gridiron. He owned and operated
Piezon’s Pizzeria in West Omaha, a local favorite known as much for its pizza as for Vrzal’s welcoming presence. He also served as an assistant football coach at Omaha Skutt Catholic School, mentoring young athletes and shaping lives both on and off the field.
Colleagues and friends have flooded social media with tributes. Mike Schaefer of 247Sports called Vrzal’s passing “a loss for so many people,” while former players and students remembered him as a mentor who “believed in me when no one else did”.
Remembering the Man Behind the Mic
On Friday, local sports radio shows dedicated segments to remembering Vrzal’s legacy. Hosts and callers alike shared stories of his generosity, humor, and unwavering support for the Nebraska community. The Nebraska Football program released a statement, saying, “From walk-on to national champion, Vrz embodied what it means to be a Nebraskan and will leave a lasting impact on teammates, kids, and communities across the state”.
What’s Next for the Community
Vrzal’s death leaves a void in Nebraska’s sports and business communities. His influence as a player, coach, broadcaster, and entrepreneur touched thousands. As the state mourns, many are reflecting on the lessons he taught—about perseverance, kindness, and giving back.
For now, the outpouring of love and memories serves as a testament to a life lived with purpose and passion. As one tribute put it:
“He will be missed, but never forgotten.”
