A Beloved Classic Gets a Modern Makeover
After nearly two decades off the air,
Reading Rainbow is making a triumphant return—this time with a fresh face and a digital twist. The iconic children’s show, which first aired in 1983 and inspired generations to fall in love with books, is back with
Mychal Threets, the librarian who became a viral sensation on TikTok for his infectious “library joy,” as its new host.
Meet the New Host: Mychal Threets
Threets, affectionately known online as “Mychal the Librarian,” is stepping into the shoes once filled by the legendary
LeVar Burton. For Threets, it’s a dream come true.
“I was raised on Reading Rainbow, LeVar Burton is my hero. I am a reader, I am a librarian because LeVar Burton and Reading Rainbow so powerfully made us believe we belong in books, we belong everywhere,” Threets shared on Instagram.
His infectious enthusiasm and commitment to literacy have already made him a favorite among young readers and parents alike. Now, he’s poised to bring that same energy to a new generation.

Why This Matters
For many, Reading Rainbow was more than a TV show—it was a gateway to imagination and lifelong learning. The revival aims to recapture that magic while embracing the digital habits of today’s kids. By blending nostalgia with innovation, the new series hopes to inspire a new generation to discover the joy of reading.

Whether you’re a parent eager to share a piece of your childhood or a kid discovering the magic for the first time, there’s never been a better time to “take a look, it’s in a book.”
