Balin Miller, a 23-year-old social media influencer and accomplished alpinist, died in a harrowing fall from Yosemite’s iconic El Capitan—an event witnessed live by hundreds of fans on TikTok.
Miller, known for his bold solo ascents and charismatic online presence, was attempting the notoriously difficult
Sea of Dreams route on El Capitan, the world’s largest granite monolith, when tragedy struck. The accident occurred on October 1, 2025, as Miller neared the end of his climb, broadcasting every moment to his devoted audience.
How the Accident Unfolded
According to climbing photographer Tom Evans, who was present in Yosemite, Miller was trying to retrieve a heavy gear bag that had become stuck. In a critical miscalculation, Miller rappelled down his lead line to free the bag, unaware that his rope did not reach the bag’s location by several feet. As he descended, he inadvertently rappelled off the end of the rope, resulting in a fatal fall from approximately 2,400 feet.
The horrifying moment was streamed live to about 500 viewers, with an estimated 100,000 fans following Miller’s progress throughout the week. Other climbers and hikers in the park also witnessed the incident.

Miller’s mother, Jeanine Girard-Moorman, confirmed the devastating news in a heartfelt social media post:
“It is with a heavy heart I have to tell you my incredible son Balin Miller died during a climbing accident today. My heart is shattered into a million pieces. I don’t know how I will get through this. I love him so much. I want to wake up from this horrible nightmare.”
His older brother, Dylan Miller, described Balin as his mentor and inspiration, saying,
“He has inspired so many people to chase their dreams, no matter how big. I can’t imagine climbing ever again without him.”
